How we meet the day
A cry, a fever, a public no, a late departure, a night that will not end — the house already knows what it will do.
Most parenting advice arrives after the moment. This chapter is the moment. We decide now, in a calm room, how we will move when the room is not calm. The first move matters more than the perfect move.
They are crying and we cannot find the reason
The cry does not stop after milk, nappy, hold, burp. Our mind starts to invent a failure.
We keep them on a body. We lower the lights. We try one change at a time, not five. We say, out loud, “I am here.” If we are afraid something is medically wrong, we call. We do not wait for a page to be brave.
Fever, a strange stillness, a breath that worries us
The body is hot, limp, or working too hard to breathe. We feel the drop in our own stomach.
We do not diagnose from memory. We call the person who can see the child. Until they answer, we stay, we watch, we keep them comfortable. This book will never tell us to wait out a fear we cannot name.
The public melt
A floor in a shop. Eyes. The heat of being watched. The urge to end it by force or by shame.
We get low. We become a wall between them and the room. We do not perform for the watchers. We leave if leaving helps. We repair later, in private, without an audience.
The first hard no
A body that goes rigid. A word, or no word — only refusal. Our plan for the morning dies.
We do not win. We hold the limit that is actually needed — safety, leaving, sleep — and we drop the ones that were only our pride. We name the feeling. We stay until the wave passes. Then we begin again, smaller.
We are late, and they will not be rushed
Keys in the hand. A clock. A child who has just discovered a sock.
We built the morning with twenty minutes of air, or we accept we are late. We do not yank a body that is still learning time. One of us takes the bag. One of us takes the child. The sock can come.
We disagree in front of them
Two truths, one baby, rising heat. Someone will be right if someone else is wrong.
We pause the debate. The adult who is calmer leads the next ten minutes. We finish the argument after they sleep, as people who chose each other. They may hear disagreement. They may not hear contempt.
Travel, a new bed, a night that will not end
The familiar room is gone. Everyone is a worse version of themselves.
We lower the bar to three things: milk, a dark-enough corner, a body they know. We do not introduce a new method on the road. Home is the method. We return to it when we return.
We are angry at a baby
A thought we are ashamed of. A tighter jaw. The wish that they would stop being a baby.
We put them down in a safe place and we leave the room. Water. A wall. A call. We do not handle a small body with a hot hand. Coming back is the practice. Shame is not the practice.
A short list we will not negotiate
- Safety
- Car seat, water, stairs, sleep surface, a hot drink set far back. These are not debates.
- We do not shake. We do not shame.
- If we are at the edge, we put them down and we get help. There is always a next minute.
- We do not lie to stop a feeling
- “Mama is coming” only if Mama is coming. Trust is built in the small true sentences.
What we will keep
- The first move: go to them
- The names we will call when we are afraid
- Permission, written, for either adult to leave the room and come back
