Book III · Chapter 13 · Nutrition

Milk, then the table

How we intend to feed — from milk to the family table — without turning food into a score, a fear, or a performance.

0–24 monthsA fed child, and a table they belong to.13 / 18

The vow is that they are fed, and that food becomes a way of belonging to this house. Method is secondary. Ideology is not a nutrient. We will change method if the baby or the parent is suffering, and we will not apologise to a theory.

The long line of food

  1. 0–6 monthsMilk is the meal. From the body, from a bottle, from both. We watch wet nappies, weight as the clinic sees it, and whether they are settling after a feed.
  2. Around 6 monthsThe table begins while milk stays first. Tastes, textures, a seat with us. We do not retire milk because a calendar turned.
  3. 6–12 monthsMore of our food, made safe. Hands. Mess. Water in a small cup. We sit with them. We do not leave a baby alone with food.
  4. 12–24 monthsThe family meal is the curriculum. Milk may continue. Grazing all day is not a personality. We offer, we sit, we let hunger do some of the teaching.

A table, not a theatre

How we will feed

  1. 01

We eat what we want them to learn

Fruit that actually exists in the house. Olive oil. Yogurt. Bread. Meat or beans we ourselves will eat. A separate grey menu teaches that food is a problem.

  2. 02

We offer, we do not force

A closed mouth is information. We take the food away without a speech. Another hour will come.

  3. 03

    Sweet is not the prize

We do not train a brain that vegetables are the price of cake. Cake can be a feast day. Tuesday can be Tuesday.

  4. 04

Allergy and choking are not vibes

We learn the foods that need care in this house and this family history. We sit with them. We know what we would do if a throat closed. We do not learn that from a caption.

Situation

They refuse everything except one food

Signal

A week of banana, or bread, or milk. Our fear that they will never eat a vegetable again.

The house

We keep offering a small ordinary plate beside the safe food. We do not become a short-order cook. We do not hide spinach in a cake as a personality. Bodies go through tunnels. The table stays the table.

What we will keep

  • The first food they reached for
  • The meal that became ordinary in this house
  • Permission to change method without a trial in the kitchen
