The nest, before the cry
What we prepare, what we refuse to prepare, and the first kit that can actually meet a small body.
The industry will sell us a nursery as a personality. We will make a corner that can darken, a surface that can hold a body, and a kit we can reach at three in the morning with one hand. The rest can wait until we know who arrived.
Prepare the house, not the fantasy
The nest

A place to sleep beside us
A firm, flat, empty sleep surface we have already practised using. We decide the first weeks now, not in the dark after a feed.

A place to change and wash
One surface, one bin, one low light. Bath can be a basin in the first days. Ceremony comes later. Safety comes first.

A place for the adults to sit
A chair that does not punish a long feed. Water within reach. A cloth. The phone charger is not the most important object in the room.

A door that can close
Visitors will come. The house needs a sentence ready: not today, after four, after the forty days. Love can wait in the hall.
The first kit
On the body
A few soft layers that open at the front. Hats for the first days. No scratchy gift piles. We buy again when we know the season and the size that is true.
On the skin
Plain water, a mild wash, a simple barrier cream, cloths we do not mind ruining. We do not open ten bottles because a list was pretty.
For milk
Whatever method we intend, we prepare the other one without shame. A baby who is hungry does not care about our plan. We care that they grow.
For paper
The documents, the numbers we will call, the bag that can leave the house in four minutes. Admin is love when it is done before the cry.
What we will not do before they arrive
- Fill every drawer
- A child outgrows a stack before we open it. Air in the cupboard is a kindness.
- Promise a method
- We may intend to feed from the body. We may need a bottle on night three. The vow is that they are fed, and that we are still a house.
- Invite the whole city
- The first days are not a salon. We write the visiting rule now, while we can still be kind about it.

- The numbers we will call, on paper, not only in a phone
- One letter to the child, sealed
