What a new body wears
How we buy, how we dress, and how a small body meets the weather — without turning a wardrobe into a personality.
A baby is not a mannequin for the house. Clothes have three jobs: keep them in their temperature, open when we need them to open, and not scratch. Beauty can come. It is not the first job. Meli Fashion is the later help with clothing and wardrobes. Here we are dressing a person who cannot yet say they are too hot.
Buy slowly, after they arrive
The buying rule
Fewer, better, open at the front
The first weeks reward zips and wraps, not a row of tiny buttons at midnight. We can love beauty after we have slept.
One size ahead, not a year ahead
A cupboard of unworn months is not love. It is a shop we cannot return to the shop.
Fibre we can name
Cotton, wool, linen when it suits the weather. We wash new things before they touch a rash-prone chest.
Gifts get a quiet edit
We thank. We keep what the body can use. We let the rest leave the house without a speech.
What changes
- Layers, a hat in the first days if the room is cool, no loose blankets in the sleep space. Night clothes we can open with one hand.
- They roll, they sit, they pull. Footed suits become a debate with a standing baby. We choose grip over pretty socks on a slick floor.
- They have an opinion. We offer two. Shoes when they walk outside — fitted, not a costume. Inside, bare feet if the floor is safe.
Dressing as a practice

We feel their chest, not our own preference
A hand on the back or chest tells the truth. Cold hands are a poor prophet. A sweaty neck is not a look.

We narrate the sleeve
“Arm. Other arm.” They learn their body by being dressed without being handled like a parcel.

We stop when they have had enough
A fight over a hat at the door is often a fight over leaving. We do the hat. We do not do the lecture.
They are dressed for a photograph and miserable
A fabric, a bow, a shoe that is a lie. Our own wish that the day look like the invitation.
We change them. The photograph can be of a comfortable child. A beautiful uncomfortable child is not the house we are building.
