The fourth trimester
They are not late to the world. The world is late to them. Holding, fragments of sleep, the cry as language, the first bath as a ceremony.
For three months they are a guest from a darker, wetter country. We do not rush them into independence. We wear them, we feed them, we let the day be short. A fourth trimester is not a metaphor. It is a design.
The weather of these weeks
- Sleep in scraps. Milk as the whole plot. We learn their sounds. We do not invite a crowd.
- The first long evening. Growth, fuss, a cry that peaks at dusk. We walk, we hold, we do not explain them to guests.
- A longer stare. A first smile that is for us. The night may still be work. The day begins to have a shape.
Holding is the curriculum
We will not leave them to cry it out in these months. We will not turn every fuss into a project. We pick them up. We try milk, nappy, air, a shoulder. We speak. If nothing works, we still hold. A baby who is held is not spoiled. They are informed that the world answers.
A day that can actually happen
- 01
Morning light
A window, a feed, a nappy, a stretch on the floor while we sit beside them. Five minutes of the sky is a day.
- 02
The long afternoon
A walk if we can. A nap on a body if we cannot. We do not stack errands onto a newborn to prove we are still ourselves.
- 03
Dusk
The hardest hour for many houses. We dim, we feed early, we move. One adult can take the baby. The other can take the kitchen. Both jobs are the night.
- 04
The first bath
Not every night. Warm room, water that would not surprise a wrist, two hands if we have them. We go slow enough that they can hear us.
Sleep in fragments
Safe and near
A firm, flat, empty surface. On their back. Close enough that we can feed without a journey. We do not invent a nest of pillows.
We do not war with night
We make it survivable. Shifts. A bottle if that is what lets one adult sleep. Dawn will come.
Day sleep is allowed to be messy
A pram, a chest, a quiet room. We are not training a performance. We are getting through a season.
The evening cry
They fold in half. Nothing we offer holds for long. The day has already used us.
We lower the room. We walk. We do not pass them between us in panic. Twenty minutes on one chest, then a swap. This hour has an ending even when it does not feel like it.
What we will keep
- The date of the first smile that was for us
- One recording of the early sound they made, if we can bear it
- The night map, revised once, in daylight
