Be safe enough to recover
A small, repeatable safety floor beats a pile of security products nobody understands.
The safety floor
- 01
Update
Supported devices, automatic updates, encryption, and screen locks.
- 02
Pause
Urgency, secrecy, gift cards, crypto, and unexpected codes are reasons to stop.
- 03
Confirm
Open the known app or call the saved number; never use the link or number in the message.
- 04
Recover
Lock the device, revoke sessions, call the carrier or bank, and tell the other steward.
Tools only when they solve a real problem
Antivirus
Keep built-in protections such as Microsoft Defender on. More security logos do not automatically mean more safety.
VPN
Useful on travel or untrusted networks when the family understands when it is on. It does not make unsafe links safe.
Hardware keys
Use them for the accounts that can reset identity or move money; two keys prevent one lost key becoming a lockout.
