The body

Wakeboarding, skating, swimming — why moving the body together keeps a family honest, and why the home is the resting place between efforts.

If you only know Meli through furniture photographs, you might think I live in a still life — travertine trays, marble lamps, everything perfectly composed. The truth is messier. I wakeboard at dawn. I skate with my partner and the kids when the parking lot is empty. I swim laps while one of them counts my lengths from the pool edge and shouts when I breathe on the wrong side.

Motion is not a hobby we squeeze in around decor. It is family language — how we speak to each other when words are not working.

Why movement matters for families

Families in abundance often forget the body. Screens, sofas, delivery food eaten over the counter — we live from the neck up. Then we wonder why we are irritable, why small conflicts explode, why the beautiful home we curated still feels tense.

Movement resets the nervous system. It teaches children that difficulty is survivable — the wakeboard fall, the scraped knee from skating, the breathlessness of the last lap. It teaches parents humility — one of my kids is faster on a board than I am now, and I have to celebrate that instead of competing. It teaches partnership: my partner holds the camera when I ride, I hold towels when he swims, we trade without keeping score.

Wakeboarding

Wakeboarding is my meditation. Dubai dawn, water flat as glass, the rope tight in my hands. I am not mother, not curator, not daughter — only body and balance and the next small correction. I come home quieter. My partner and the kids know: when Mama wakeboards, breakfast is better.

I taught one of them to ride first. He was fearless in a way that terrified me. His sibling watched from the boat and asked questions about physics — why the board planes, why you lean back. Motion became science became connection.

Skating

Skating is one of my kids’ languages. He does not always want to talk about school or screens or the fight with his friend. He wants to skate. I meet him there as companion. We do not need to speak. The rolling is enough. I am learning again what adulthood forgot: that presence does not always require conversation.

Swimming

Swimming is the whole family’s reset. Water is honest — you cannot fake fitness, you cannot scroll while you swim. My partner swims. One of the kids is still learning; I am still teaching. My mother swam in the Aegean every summer of her youth. When I tell her we swam fifty laps, she laughs and says that is nothing. Heritage in motion.

One organism

Our vision for families is organic — one body navigating life. Motion trains that body. When we move together, we remember we belong to each other. The home we curate is the resting place between efforts — marble cool after heat, lamps warm after dusk, trays that hold the water bottles and sunscreen and the small debris of an active life.

Decorate, yes. Choose meaning, yes. But also move — together, often, without optimizing it for Instagram. That is how families stay alive enough to deserve beautiful rooms.

An issue, not a blast

When a new issue opens — or a piece we could not keep to ourselves — it goes out.

No noise. Only what we are actually building.
