How we source
I travel — physically when I can, digitally always. I call suppliers in Italy, Turkey, Iran, India, Portugal, Indonesia. I ask for samples. I hold them in my hands in Dubai, in the heat that changes how stone feels, in the light that pours through floor-to-ceiling glass differently than it does in a Carrara workshop. I ask: will this age with a family? Will it survive children, guests, humidity, the scratch of a wedding ring set down too fast?
Marble from Italy for veining that catches Gulf sunset. Travertine from Turkey for pores that hold shadow like memory. Rainforest brown from quarries that look like distant hills under glass. Wood from workshops that dry it properly — because bad wood warps in this climate and good wood becomes heirloom. Abaca and natural fibers from weavers who understand that texture is not visual only; it is tactile hospitality.
The edit, not the origin
What matters is not where a piece was born but whether it passes the edit. I ask the same questions for every object, whether I found it in an Athens flea market or designed it myself:
- Does the material speak before the brand does?
- Will a family use this daily, not only photograph it?
- Does it bridge cultures without cliché?
- Will it age alongside you for decades?
- Does it add meaning to abundance — not another object, but a deeper one?
If the answer is no, it does not enter the Meli edit — no matter how beautiful the Instagram photo.
Global craft, family filter
We run Meli as a filter together. I bring samples home. My partner turns them in his hands before anyone speaks. One of my kids says which vessel feels too heavy. Another holds lamps up to the wall at dusk and tells me where the glow should land. My mother — on video call from Athens — asks the question she always asks: Will you use it together?
That is curation at Meli scale. Not a buyer in a showroom ticking margin boxes. A household arguing gently about whether the red marble is too dramatic for the entry. The world supplies the craft. We supply the meaning.
Why this matters now
In abundance, curation is ethics. To choose slowly from the whole world is to reject the algorithm that says more, faster, cheaper. It is to say: this family will live with this object for twenty years, so we will find the right one — wherever it comes from — and we will choose it together.
