A gold frame on the wall can read flat: paint, foil, or a thin edge around plain glass. We wanted the frame itself to facet and flash, the way a stone turns in the hand, and the glass to sit inside that light. We went looking for a mirror built like jewellery.
We found it in Annemie Vanzieleghem’s Precious Gold. Vanzieleghem shapes mirrors that treat the frame as the story: here the surround is cast in one piece of polyurethane, light and stable in humidity, then decorated by hand with gold metal leaf so each plane catches a different glint. The faceted structure makes the plate gleam rather than glow evenly. The glass is 93 cm wide, 152 cm tall and 9 cm deep, about 16 kg, with fixings for two hang directions. The curve lifts the frame slightly off the wall, as if the mirror were leaning forward into the room.
It does not sit flush like a sheet of glass. The depth and the facets hold shadow at the edge, so the wall behind it reads darker and the gold reads brighter. At 152 cm you see yourself full length; at 93 cm wide it suits a bedroom wall or a landing. It is not bathroom proof — keep it in dry rooms. Hang it vertical or horizontal; the fixing allows either.
Let the frame flash before the reflection does.
